We're certified 'Good to go'

I have now resumed running my workshops albeit in a quite different way.  The next few weeks will busy rescheduling all the dates that were postponed due to the lockdown.  There will be a handful of places available to new students, but the majority will be filled with those who have been patiently waiting to rebook.

The obvious changes to the studio are the divided work benches.  My lovely husband has designed and built the frames and installed safety glass.  This will make sure they remain see-through (unlike acrylic screens) and are nice and easy to keep clean. We also have lightweight, adjustable polycarbonate face shields and of course hand sanitising stations at the entrance and throughout the studio.  So far, everyone seems very happy with the new safety measures.

I hope to add some new dates to the calendar, once I see how things progress in the UK with regards to COVID-19.  Please subscribe to my newsletter to get the latest news.

Stay safe everyone 😊  😘

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are all staying safe at home with your families and loved ones

I am sure that we are all waiting to hear (maybe next week) what the guidance will be for coming out of lockdown and in the absence of any news, I just wanted to reassure you about your workshop bookings.

As you know, all my workshops have been postponed while the lockdown is in place and all bookings affected by the lockdown will be rescheduled at some point. I can't offer any dates at the moment as I don't know how long it's going to last. However, I will be offering a choice of dates once we start rescheduling and all those bookings will be valid for a further 12 months from the date the lockdown is lifted. I would hope that once the schools are open again I would be able to resume my classes.

I would like to thank you all again for your support and I sincerely hope it won't be too long before we are all back making some glassy loveliness very soon.
This is what I have been working on recently.  A large, four-panel mosaic for the back of the loo door. I hope to have it finished soon.

I also made some fabric face masks for local care homes.  If you'd like to make some here is the Facebook Group Bideford Community Face Mask Drive.  I am sure there will be something local to you if you're not a Facebook user.
I really struggled to stitch the edges on my machine. There were so many layers of fabric folded over so you definitely need to have a decent sewing machine.

Stay safe everyone.  I hope to see you soon. x

I realise that I have neglected this blog for quite some time but there has been such a lot going on this year and I simply haven't had a minute to spare!

The North Devon Art Trek back in September was a great event and I was delighted to welcome visitors to my studio and give them a cuppa while they looked around.  One of my open studio days was also a World's Biggest Coffee Morning for MacMillan Cancer Support. With your help we raised over £118 for the charity.
Don't worry if you didn't manage to visit this time as I plan to hold my own occasional open days and possibly some workshop preview days too.  If you'd like to stay informed, please subscribe to my newsletter.

I am now busy gearing up for my next event which is the fabulous Artisan Market taking place in Barnstaple's Pannier Market on Sunday 3rd November from 10am to 4pm.  I will be there with all my stained and fused glass creations along with over 100 other contemporary artists and makers from North Devon and across the South West.  I will also be giving a demonstration of how I make my cute little Christmas angels, so why not come along and celebrate all things 'handmade' by doing your Christmas Shopping.  Entry is just £2 per person which includes a free tea or coffee.

I have 11 more workshop days between now and the end of the year including a new, 2-day Christmas Wreaths workshop, along with all my usual Christmas decorations workshops.

Did you know that 'Halloween' with its Pagan roots originated with the Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sa-when). The Celts believed that the veil between their world and the next became very thin at this time of year and could be easily crossed by the departed as well as ghouls, spirits and other creatures.

Families would set an extra place at the table, light a fire to guide their loved ones home and dress in costumes and dance around the fire to ward off any evil creatures.
More recently, Samhain, like many ancient Pagan festivals became Christianised as All Hallows Eve, eventually becoming Halloween.  The legend of the 'Jack-o-lantern' is thought to be about a drunken Irishman who made a bargain with the devil over a gambling debt and was condemned to
roam the earth for eternity with just a  hollowed out turnip and a lighted coal.
The Irish took the tradition of carving Jack-o-lanterns to America where pumpkins, which were not available in Ireland, were used instead as they were so much easier to carve than turnips!

Studio Now Open

My studio is now officially open.
I'm really pleased with the Stonehenge day and night panels for my studio door and Carl has now installed it.  It is a beautiful old Victorian door anyway, but now it's just perfect for my creative space.  :-)
Workshops
I have many different types of workshops already planned this year and will be adding more after July so keep an eye on my website or Facebook page.  Workshops are all-inclusive and make a great birthday gift for family or friends. Gift vouchers are available from my website.
Picture
I can offer tailored workshops to suit you, If you have a group of friends who'd like a creative day, perhaps a hen party, or a birthday, please get in touch.

What's New?
Studio nights (and possibly also days) will start in August.  This will enable you to work on your own projects. Sessions will run regularly on Thursdays from 7pm to 9.30pm and will cost £7 (or 3 for £20).  The price includes: studio workbench space, use of all tools & machinery, general consumables plus tea/coffee etc. To be able to take advantage of this, students will need to have previously taken a workshop with me.  Once you've done that, you'll be free to do your own thing.  You're welcome to bring your own glass etc. or choose to purchase from my supplies and I'll be on hand for advice if required.

One-to-one classes:
If you would like something more exclusive, I also offer one-to-one tuition days in leaded panels, copper foil, or stained glass mosaics.  It includes all  glass tools and materials, plus refreshments, lunch and my undivided attention.  Please get in touch if you're interested.

Stained glass studio in progress

8/3/2018

Yes, I know if looks a mess but, trust me, it's going to be totally fabulous.

That 6'1" beardy bloke at the end of the room is my lovely husband, Carl.  He is doing practically all the work, such as putting up the ceiling, walls, installing windows etc.  He's my hairy hero ;-)
Anyway, there is currently a little staircase to the right of him which will be removed to make way for the toilet facilities.  There is a small window just behind his left shoulder (currently boarded up) which looks out over the skipyard behind us.  Moving forward from there will be a small kitchen area so I can provide lunch for my students.  This will be where the first window is on the right.
Then we'll have a lovely woodburner on the left where that red space heater is.
The rest of the space will be taken up by workbenches, a kiln and storage for tools and loads of gorgeous glass.

If all goes to plan there will also be a small area to display assorted stained glass pieces and a space to showcase other crafts.

We're aiming for it to be ready in time for the 26th May workshop.

1. It reduces stress and anxiety - creative activities impact the body in a way similar to meditation, and decreasing stress protects your overall health. Give yourself permission to relax, and have fun with it.

2. It's mentally stimulating - when you start creating, you have a certain end target in your mind. It's a personal challenge which makes you better at problem-solving.

3. It improves your mood - creative activities have been shown to improve overall emotional health.

4. Creativity encourages creative thinking and lets you come up with your own solutions. Every time you engage in a new or complex activity, you create new connections between brain cells.

5. Make friends - it's social! Getting together for a creative class promotes more than happiness, it promotes health too.
What are you waiting for? Get some colourful creativity in your life. There's something to suit everyone, from absolute beginners to experienced glass crafters. Please take a look at the different workshops planned for 2018.
I offer three different types of stained glass workshop:

Copper Foil method (Tiffany style)
This refers to the style of Louis Comfort Tiffany where each piece of glass is edged in copper foil before being soldered together. This method is generally used for making gifts and smaller pieces such as bunting and suncatchers.

Traditional Leaded Windows
In these classes, we use the centuries-old method which has hardly changed for 800 years. A panel or window consists of pieces of coloured glass held together with strips of preformed lead channel which is then soldered and cemented. Students can complete a window up to A3 size on a 2-day workshop.

Stained Glass Mosaics
This is the process of creating a design or pattern using small pieces of stained glass adhered to either a mirror, glass sheet, vase or wooden shape. Students can complete up a mosaic up to A4 size on a 1-day workshop.

Inspired by Blue Planet II

17/12/2017

Iridescent stained glass whale

I love Sir David Attenborough, and let's face it, who doesn't? I have grown up watching his captivating documentaries.  Now I have started making a few pieces inspired by The Blue Planet II.

I've made some whales, sea turtles, angler fish and a few other generic fish to start with and then I hope I'll get to dolphins, ray, jellyfish and those weird looking wrasse look really cool too. There are simply not enough hours in the day to make all the thing I want to make!

I have also attended my first two local craft fairs. It's been great fun chatting to people who are interested in crafts and stained glass workshops too. However, what I really should have done is take photos of everything before the craft fair. Now a lot of my Blue Planet pieces have already gone off to their new homes or to be wrapped up for Christmas. Note to self: get photos organised!

Anyway, if you like what you see then why not come along the last Christmas Market on Saturday 23rd December? There's a farmers food market too.

Trying to contain my excitement

Exciting News!
I am so excited to be able to tell you that plans are now underway for converting the space above my husband's workshop in Bideford into a purpose built creative space for stained glass as well as a variety of other arty & crafty workshops.
It's an old Victorian warehouse with great potential, however, it does need dividing up and having a few facilities such as lighting and heating installed.
Once it's completed, it is my intention to run regular 2-hour evening classes to enable students to complete more ambitious projects.  With my entire selection of glass and materials to hand there will be a much greater choice than presently, where materials I need for classes in Umberleigh have to be loaded into a small car.
I already have quite a few stained glass classes scheduled for 2018.
If all goes to plan I'm hoping the warehouse space will be ready by May. Watch this space!
