Gigha Klinkenborg - Multi-award winning glass artist and teacher
Hi, I'm Gigha, and I am named after a beautiful Hebridean Island situated just off the west coast of Scotland. I'm a total craftaholic! A serial glass artist, stitcher, painter and hoarder of craft supplies and indeed, anything that could possibly be used for crafting purposes! I have been creating with stained glass for nearly 30 years and love it more than ever. I get my inspiriaton from the colours found in everyday life, such as interesting and bright packaging, boats on the Estuary, and of course the beautiful North Devon coast. I never tire of making colourful things from a variety of different types of stained glass and fusable glass. I am lucky enough to work in my own fabulous studio (my happy place) on the first floor of an old Victorian warehouse on Torridge Hill, Bideford. Spending time in my studio, designing and creating with glass is particularly therapeutic and teaching my students is extremely rewarding. Seeing students arrive with very little or no experience and then going home so utterly pleased and proud of the pieces that they have created is one of my favourite things about being a teacher. I live in Bideford, North Devon with my husband, Carl, who used restore classic VWs but is now mostly retired. However, he is a pretty good carpenter and fabricater of almost anything so I know that whatever I need to complement my glass or studio, he's the man to make it. If you're local to Bideford, you're bound to see our lovely 1974 van (Burn-E the 'FEUERWEHR' fire bus) around town. (Although not recently as he is currently undergoing a major restoration). |
